Homeowner Shoots Suspect in North Las Vegas

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Two teenagers who broke into a North Las Vegas home Monday morning made a big mistake. The homeowner was home and he shot one of them.

The teen is recovering after being shot in the shoulder, and police are still looking for the other suspect. Both broke into the backdoor of a home at the 6500 block of McCarran Street, near Losee Road and Deer Springs Way, in broad daylight.

According to North Las Vegas police officer Chrissie Coon, the two had no idea the homeowner would be home and armed.

"He was at home, heard a loud noise downstairs, confronted the subjects in his home as they were approaching the upstairs," said Officer Coon.

Coon says the homeowner shot one round at the suspects, both ran away. Minutes later, police received a 911 call from a woman who claims her son was shot in the arm.

Three Shot in North Las Vegas

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Gunfire erupted in North Las Vegas Friday afternoon. A shooting outside a convenience store sent three people to the hospital including a teenager.

North Las Vegas Police rushed to the Quick Check convenience store on Carey near Losee Friday afternoon. Officers brought out the yellow tape, because they knew they had a crime scene. It was clear people had been shot, but they were nowhere to be found.

"Shortly after that, dispatch received information from UMC that there were three shooting victims that had been dropped off there," said North Las Vegas Police Officer Chrissie Coon.

Detectives believe the incident started when two adults and one teenager walked into the Quick Check just before 3:00p.m. Inside the store, they engaged in a heated confrontation with another customer.

Business Thrives with Unique Plan

LAS VEGAS -- Despite tough economic times, certain businesses across the Las Vegas valley are still doing well. Particularly businesses renting out space for other businesses. It's a concept one salon in the north side of the valley has been doing for a little over two years.

The Rain Salon looks like one big salon. But unlike others, there are 30 different studios inside and each one is their own place.

"They're really like their own salon within our salon," said Rain owner Ashley Demille.

That's because rather than renting out a chair from a salon, they rent out their very own studio.

"In a closed environment like this where we have everybody in an individual deal, it's more like a private setting," said barber Randy Orr.

As part of their weekly rent, spaces come complete with everything they need to run their business. More importantly, though, stylists are their own boss.

New Vets Hospital to Help Thousands

LAS VEGAS -- Veterans returning from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq come home to a health care system facing major changes in Las Vegas. A new VA hospital in North Las Vegas could change a local system some veterans say was once "woefully lacking."

The new hospital under construction near I-215 and Pecos should be open late 2012. But there are more changes in store for veterans just returning home and those who served in wars decades ago.

Military veterans gathered at Boulder City's cemetery to remember their fallen friends, while thinking about how to keep their legacy of service alive. Many now regularly seek care from VA hospitals.

"Current state of health care is improving. It was woefully lacking before. But with the new hospital coming in 2012, it's going to help," said retired Navy Captain W.J. Perlmutter.

North Las Vegas Police Arrest Five Teens For Robbery Spree

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Five teenagers are under arrest after police say they engaged in a robbery spree in North Las Vegas Wednesday night.

North Las Vegas Police say they received reports of robberies Wednesday afternoon. All of the reports occurred within an hour and each had the same suspect description.

In each case, the suspects surrounded teen victims, showed a weapon and demanded property.

"(The) multiple suspects surrounded them, armed with a handgun, and demanded their property items," said North Las Vegas Police spokesperson Chrissie Coon. "They were looking for... iPods, cell phones, you know, things that are popular among high school students."

Police eventually caught the suspects in a stolen vehicle. Police say they arrested four boys and one girl. All are between the ages of 16 and 17.
