Man Who Shot at Reality Film Crew a School Teacher

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Clark County School District confirms the suspect arrested for allegedly opening fire on a reality TV crew is a teacher at J.D. Smith Middle School.

North Las Vegas police arrested 40-year-old Carlos Barron for attempted murder after he allegedly fired shots at a camera crew filming a reality show.

Police say Barron became angry after a van was parked in front of his home on Vigilante Court, near Losee Road and East Centennial Parkway. Police say Barron assaulted one of the people in the van after demanding they move the vehicle.

The people in the van belonged to a film crew of the show "Repo Games." They were shooting a repossession that was occurring in Barron's neighborhood.

After Barron struck the person inside the van, crew members confronted him. He allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband and opened fire.

North Las Vegas to Charge for July 2 Event

North Las Vegas to Charge for July 2 Event

NORTH LAS VEGAS - Cash-short North Las Vegas isn't going to cancel its annual Independence Day weekend event after all.

But it will begin charging a $2 admission fee to make up some of the projected $117,000 cost.

City Council Councilwoman Anita Wood said Wednesday that even with a $22.6 million budget shortfall, the city needs to offer something to residents.

The Las Vegas Sun reports the city is already cutting Balloonapalooza and Taste and Tunes, and cutting back on kids' free swimming days.

The city's Independence Day Jubilee is scheduled July 2. A city official, Michelle Bailey Hedgepeth, says the $2 per person fee could generate about $50,000 of the cost of the events.

She says that's still the cheapest price among the various Fourth of July events at which Las Vegas-area groups and municipalities charge admission.

King High Card Decides North Las Vegas Primary

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) -- Both candidates drew diamonds. But Linda Meisenheimer's king topped Tanya Flanagan's five to make her the winner of a tied primary election in North Las Vegas.

Cutting cards is a uniquely Nevada way to settle deadlocked elections.

The latest example came during a special North Las Vegas City Council meeting on Thursday.

Meisenheimer now advances to the June 7 general election against Pamela Goynes-Brown.

Flanagan and Meisenheimer tied for second place in the city's Ward 2 race during in the April 5 primary. Each drew 328 votes.

The cut of the cards was overseen by David Hernandez. He's the head of the College of Southern Nevada casino management program.

Hernandez says Nevada is the only state that uses a draw of the cards to break election tied.

17-Year-Old Killed in Overnight Shooting Identified

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Clark County Coroner has identified a 17-year-old teen shot to death Wednesday night in North Las Vegas. The teen's name is Heath Walton, and people in the area say he used to live nearby.

The shooting happened in North Las Vegas on Reynolds Avenue, near Civic Center Drive and Owens Avenue.

Walton's friends say he was visiting a house he used to live in and was struck by a bullet during a drive-by shooting.

Police say the shooting happened around 10 p.m. Wednesday night. When emergency personnel arrived, they found Walton with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Friends say he used to live on Taylor Avenue, one street over, until his house burned down. They say he was visiting old friends and can't believe someone would want to kill him.

Those friends say Walton was not a gang member.
