North Las Vegas traffic officers conducted a "Pedestrians Matter" safety event March 18 targeting drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk and pedestrians who failed to utilize marked crosswalks.   

Officers issued the following citations:

104 - failure to yield to pedestrian violations 

4     - seat belt/child restraint violations 

11   - driver's license violations 

6     - registration violations

2     - equipment violations

18   - insurance violations 

1     - failure to yield violation 

12   - miscellaneous violations

49   - verbal warnings

If you have a water-efficient landscape in your yard or you’re a professional who has worked on one, the Southern Nevada Water Authority has a contest for you.

Local residents and landscape professionals interested in showing off their water-efficient landscapes are encouraged to enter the SNWA's 13th Annual Landscape Awards competition.

Applications for this free community contest, along with award criteria, categories and other information are available at snwa.com through Thursday, May 12. Applications also are available by calling the Conservation Helpline at 258-SAVE (7283).

The SNWA's Landscape Awards honor residential and professional water-efficient landscapes that are both attractive and functional. Entrants must have a working irrigation system appropriate to their design.

The City of North Las Vegas received a $1,000 prize through the Reader's Digest "We Hear You America" campaign and tour, and could have a shot at a $40,000 prize as well.

The prize money will be used to offer a free day at a community pool for children.

The campaign is intended to bring money and attention to towns across America that have been most affected by the economic downturn. By the tour's end, the campaign will have hit 100 American cities.

Reader's Digest tour representatives presented the check to North Las Vegas Mayor Shari L. Buck Wednesday morning.

"I'm really pleased we were selected," Buck said. "We are a great town, but because of these tough economic times, we've had to close some community pools.
