North Las Vegas Council Race Could Come Down to High Draw

North Las Vegas Council Race Could Come Down to High Draw

NORTH LAS VEGAS -- North Las Vegas could turn to a cut of the cards to determine who will advance to a June runoff in one of two contested City Council primary races.

In the city's Ward 2 race, Pamela Goynes-Brown drew 27 percent of the vote in Tuesday's municipal primary. Candidates Tanya Flanagan and Linda Meisenheimer tied for the other place on the ballot, with 328 votes each.

Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax says either candidate can request a recount. If the result is still a tie, the race could be determined by a draw for high card from a deck of playing cards.

Election results will be canvassed April 20 by the North Las Vegas City Council. Once the canvassing is done, Meisenheimer and Flanagan will have until April 26 to request a recount.

New Principal Talks About Mojave's Future

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Mojave High School's new principal will hold his first meeting on campus Tuesday night. Mojave is one of the three high schools where the entire staff will have to re-apply for their jobs next year.

The selected schools must improve their academic performance in order for the school district to get millions of dollars in grant money.

"It's not the greatest school," said Rebecca Guzman, a student at Mojave High School, who plans on attending CSN after graduation. She says her time at the school hasn't been easy. "They don't give us any encouragement." She says it seems as if some of the teachers don't care because the school doesn't perform well academically.

Someone hoping to change that perception is incoming principal Antonio Rael.
