Local Pet Rescue Group Faces Foreclosure

Local Pet Rescue Group Faces Foreclosure

One of Nevada's largest animal rescue shelters might have to close if it cannot raise sufficient money to avoid foreclosure on its Amargosa Valley dog sanctuary.

Adopt A Rescue Pet (ARP) has less than 45 days to raise $70,000 to pay off the pending balloon payment for its five-acre dog sanctuary in Amargosa Valley. Private foundation grant funding was to have provided the money in January, but when the foundation suddenly went defunct, the non-profit pet rescue organization found itself in trouble.

"We are deeply concerned about the future of pets in the Las Vegas area if we are not able to secure the funding necessary to keep our doors open," ARP Founder Elizabeth Rubin said.

I-Team: Fallout in Sick Leave Scandal Felt by North Las Vegas Firefighters

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Firefighters across Nevada have been under heavy scrutiny for over a year. Accusations of padded overtime and sick leave abuse have lead to major calls for reform.

But it is also causing a political firestorm and a formal complaint with the state about North Las Vegas. The firefighters and the city council in North Las Vegas thought they had a deal -- give up pay bumps and keep 33 jobs. Then sick leave abuse became as issue elsewhere, and the spotlight got hotter.

The sick leave abuse scandal in Clark County paused a final vote on the North Las Vegas agreement. Councilwoman Anita Wood didn't want drama.

"You don't run for office because you want to go laying off police and firefighters. I can tell you that was not at the top of my campaign list," she said.

She knew the firefighters and the city has the agreement. Now there's a complaint saying that agreement was negotiated in bad faith.
