Businesses See Lure of North Las Vegas

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Cecil Campbell says business at his North Las Vegas barbeque restaurant is smoking.

"We're moving right along. We're well over 50,000 racks now, and we're less than 40 weeks old," he said.

Hog's Heaven opened near 215 and Decatur Boulevard last May. Campbell is already considering opening restaurants at other locations.

"North Las Vegas is growing very quickly, and we wanted to be a part of that economic growth," he said. "We wanted to be right here, get our foot in the door before everybody else got out here, and we thought it was a good time."

According to the U.S. Census, North Las Vegas grew nearly 88% over the last ten years. That's the largest growth in southern Nevada.

Jump Rope for Heart at Manch Elementary School

Students at Jacob E. Manch Elementary School literally jumped their way to better health.  With help from their PE teacher, Lara Heifner and Principal Diane Lewis, the students decided to take part in the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart campaign. It required them to learn about the importance of heart health, to take part in regular exercise, and learn ways to increase their heart rate and why it's important for them to do that. These lessons were spread throughout the month.

The campaign culminated with a big event on the school's blacktop play area on Thursday, February 24th, 2011.  Hundreds of kids took part in a massive jump-a-thon. To help support this positive campaign, The Cannery Casino & Hotel, which frequently assists the school with activities, decided to give the kids something to be proud of.  The Cannery donated $1,000.00 to the American Heart Association on behalf of all the kids.  That money will help the Heart Association spread this positive health message to even more schools next year.

AGC Charities Operation Opening Doors to Help Las Vegas Family

AGC Charities Operation Opening Doors to Help Las Vegas Family

A Las Vegas family is going to be getting a free home renovation, compliments of the AGC's Operation Opening Doors. The Rotta family has a sixteen year old daughter that suffers from a very rare form of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, that can cause her to have thousands of seizures every day. This makes it very difficult for her to safely move around the family's split level home. During the weekend of March 19th, members of the AGC will renovate the Rotta's home to make everything wheelchair accessible, creating a safe environment that will allow the Rotta family to care for their daughter more easily.
