North Las Vegas Police Unveil New Crime Map

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nv -- People living in the North Las Vegas can track crime via the internet. They can find out what's going on where they live, where the kids go to school, or even the parks their kids play in.

You can type in the category of crime, auto theft, burglary, narcotics, homicide, and then you find a location, and see what pops up. It's this tool that police hope will help keep people alert to what's happening where they live.

Routine errands like getting your car washed seem pretty safe. But for people like North Las Vegas resident Charlotte Anderson, doing this during the day is a way for her to avoid being a victim of crime. "Who wants to get robbed or killed?

North Las Vegas Faces Budget Crisis

The North Las Vegas City Council has learned they must make deep spending cuts that could jeopardize some services and even jobs. One councilman said with record unemployment, North Las Vegas is not in a recession, but close to a depression.

The council meeting was mostly doom and gloom as the city now tries to cure the budget blues. The city's finance director did not sugarcoat what he learned after the bitter number crunching.

"The bad news is this gap will continue to grow as time goes by. Simply put, mayor and council, this is the eight-ton elephant walking through your living room from a financial standpoint. If not fixed, it really threatens our existence as a city," said finance director Phil Stoeckinger.

The ugly math means North Las Vegas needs to tackle budget adjustments -- a $14 million chunk is just the beginning. City leaders realize spending must be cut and ultimately municipal jobs could be in jeopardy as the unemployment rate soars.
