Shelters Full, Homeless Face Freezing Nights

Sonja Nissen and her son walk into the Shade Tree shelter after being given a bed for the night.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Sonja Nissen and her 9-year-old son, Jordan, arrived 25 minutes too late.

Hoping for a warm place to spend the night, the homeless mother was turned away from the Shade Tree winter shelter Tuesday night because all 25 cots had already been claimed.

For four hours, Nissen struggled to find a warm place to spend the night. Temperatures flirted with freezing, dropping to a windy 39 degrees Fahrenheit.

At the Salvation Army, where she was sent after failing to secure a place at Shade Tree, Nissen was told its shelter also was full. She then tried the church across the street.
