Former North Las Vegas Police Officers Acquitted

LAS VEGAS -- A Clark County jury has acquitted two former police officers accused of falsifying a report and allegedly beating a casino patron.

Former North Las Vegas police officers James Balelo and Mark Miles were found not guilty on Friday. Miles and Balelo were both charged with false report by a public officer. Miles was also charged with oppression under the color of office.

Investigators say Miles beat a 31-year-old California man while he was in handcuffs at the Cannery Casino. The man had been detained by casino security after allegedly causing a disturbance and waving a bottle around a casino bar. The incident happened in late 2008.

Police say the victim didn't file a complaint, but a North Las Vegas Police Department patrol supervisor found inconsistencies in reports that Miles and Balelo submitted.

The men were fired from the NLVPD after an internal investigation.
