Surveillance Video Released in Alleged Officer Beating

NORTH LAS VEGAS -- 8 News NOW has obtained surveillance video of an incident for which two former North Las Vegas Police Officers were fired, arrested, and put on trial. The pair were found not guilty of abuse of power on Friday.

Mark Alan Miles was accused of beating a California man and throwing him to the ground. It happened at the Cannery Casino in December of 2008. The man was thrown to the ground while handcuffed.

A second officer, James Balelo, was with Miles and both were accused of falsifying reports about the incident.

The two men were found not guilty on all charges, but the North Las Vegas Police Department says they maintain they made the right decision in firing both officers.

"At this point, our department is done with them. We have a different standard. We have a much higher standard than the criminal court does with regard to the officers behavior. So while they were acquitted on the criminal side, administratively, we still felt they should be held accountable," said NLVPD Sgt. Tim Bedwell.

Bedwell says as in any criminal investigation, the department stands by whatever the jury decides.
