Students shocked, saddened by fatal crash involving 14-year-old student

Family, friends, and classmates of Elijah Coggins are in total shock over a bizarre crash that left the 14-year-old teen dead. Elijah was one of two teens hit by a car that veered off the road as they were walking home from school.

It happened Tuesday afternoon on N. 5th Street near Centennial Parkway in North Las Vegas. The crash site is just minutes from Legacy High School.

Fourteen-year-old Trevor Dodd was also struck. He's in the hospital in critical condition.

"I was a friend of both of them," said a student at Legacy High School said.

"That's crazy," Tamia Barnes, Legacy High student," said. "I've never had that happened at my school."

"Honestly, I didn't personally know them, but I did have friends who knew them, and a lot of them didn't show today because I think they were really sad," Barnes said.

Victor Diaz says he was friends with Elijah and Trevor.
Both teens were walking home from school when they were struck.

"I don't feel like even going over there," Diaz said.

Elijah died from his injuries at UMC, and Trevor is still recovering.
Diaz says both Elijah and Trevor were inseparable. He describes Elijah as quiet and calm.

"Wow I can't believe something like this happened because I just witnessed something like this happening not too long ago," said Markisha Beachan, the mother of a 15-year-old student.

Both parents and students say Legacy High did inform them about what had happened and also offered to counsel students.

Trevor's mom told 8 News NOW they're hoping to hold a vigil for Elijah on Wednesday night.
