Another Amazon fulfillment center opening in North Las Vegas

Online retail giant Amazon is set to open its sixth fulfillment center in Nevada in just a couple of months.

The word that comes to mind to describe the facility is massive. It's nearly 900,000 square feet and four floors. That's about nine super Walmart's worth of space.

This is the company's fourth one in North Las Vegas and will be filled with books and small electronics.

"We are very excited to keep growing, especially in North Las Vegas now," said Eduardo Escalante, facility general manager, Amazon.

Escalante is in charge of getting the facility up and running for Amazon.

"We will be moving millions of units on a day when it is running, you see our facilities like this time of year, they're very, very busy."

North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee has pushed for large projects building big warehouses and distribution centers in recent years to attract big businesses to town.

The strategy has largely come to fruition -- but Lee says there's more to come.

"We've done a lot of good on distribution centers, now we're moving into the manufacturing mode, we're bringing companies that actually manufacture," said Mayor Lee.

Developer Vantrust Real Estate has taken advantage of expedited permitting practices in North Las Vegas -- developing more than a half-dozen facilities like this one in the immediate area. Amazon is a repeat customer.

"We've built over 2 million square feet for them just in the past 24 months, so they enjoy the area too," said Keith Earnest, executive vp, Vantrust Real Estate.

A lot of automation will go into the facility. As you can see by all of the conveyor belts, rollers and other infrastructure going in.

There will also be several thousand little orange robots scooting along the floor moving millions of items but the facility will also employ more than 1,000 full-time workers.

New jobs that Mayor Lee is pleased to see coming to his city. Amazon representatives say there will be an announcement on when the fulfillment center will be open for business sometime in the early part of next year.
