NORTH LAS VEGAS - Cash-short North Las Vegas isn't going to cancel its annual Independence Day weekend event after all.

But it will begin charging a $2 admission fee to make up some of the projected $117,000 cost.

City Council Councilwoman Anita Wood said Wednesday that even with a $22.6 million budget shortfall, the city needs to offer something to residents.

The Las Vegas Sun reports the city is already cutting Balloonapalooza and Taste and Tunes, and cutting back on kids' free swimming days.

The city's Independence Day Jubilee is scheduled July 2. A city official, Michelle Bailey Hedgepeth, says the $2 per person fee could generate about $50,000 of the cost of the events.

She says that's still the cheapest price among the various Fourth of July events at which Las Vegas-area groups and municipalities charge admission.
