Rainbow Theatre Holds Auditions for Adults, Children

The City of Las Vegas Rainbow Company Youth Theatre will hold auditions for the musical production, "How I Became a Pirate" at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

Roles are available for adults and young people ages 9 and up. Comfortable clothing that allows for movement should be worn, and a prepared song is strongly recommended.

The show is scheduled to run June 3-12 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. For more information, call 229-6553.

Free Movie Night Offered at Drive-In Theater

The Las Vegas 5 Drive-In will be hosting a free movie night on April 14, featuring recent movie blockbusters. Tangled, Megamind and Just Go With It.

Tickets to the drive-in regularly cost $6.50 per adult, and $1 for children 5-11 years old. Kids under 5 are free. Double features are offered each night.

Drive-in presentation has changed considerably over the years. The biggest improvement in presentation is the addition of Technalight, which produces a picture seven times brighter than before, along with upgraded Dolby stereo sound that comes right through the car stereo.

Las Vegas 5 Drive-In is located at 4150 West Carey Avenue, at Rancho Drive.

NOVA science series presents Japan’s Killer Quake March 30 on Vegas PBS

NOVA science series presents Japan’s Killer Quake, an original one-hour documentary at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30 on Vegas PBS. The program takes viewers moment by moment through Japan’s devastating earthquake and tsunami. The program gives scientific context to the chain of events responsible for one of the most destructive disasters in recorded history with first-person accounts from those who survived, and from experts and scientists currently on the scene.

Japan’s March 11 earthquake was the world’s fourth largest earthquake since record keeping began in 1900. The tsunami rushed Japan’s coast with 30-foot waves and traveled six miles inland, wiping out entire towns in minutes.

Escobedo, Legacy Win Big at Music Competition

Escobedo Middle School and Legacy High School's Chamber Ensemble claimed top honors at the "Notes to Grow" music competition for local middle and high schools Saturday at Leavitt Middle School.

Both schools received $8,000 for their first-place finishes. A total of $36,000 in prize money sponsored by Las Vegas area Walmart and Sam's Club stores was divided among seven area schools’ music programs.

Local middle school and high school musical groups submitted applications and performance video for the contest for online evaluation and public voting.

Local Music Students Compete for $36,000 in Prizes

Local middle school and high school students will compete Saturday for $36,000 in cash prizes for their music programs in the “Notes to Grow” music contest.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Myron Leavitt Middle School, 4701 Quadrel St., and admission is free.

Middle school and high school musical groups submitted applications and performance video for the contest for online evaluation and public voting. The four middle school and four high school groups receiving the most votes were invited to perform on Saturday.

Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or low folding chairs to be more comfortable during the event. Local Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores sponsored the prize money for the competition.
