A North Las Vegas Fire captain earned distinction Monday for years of outstanding service.

Mike Bako received the 10th annual Safety Officer Award from the Las Vegas Valley Rotary Clubs for more than 25 years of service to the community and exceptional work with youth groups.

Bako was selected for his leadership in coordinating, supervising and volunteering his time to educate and improve the lives of kids. Each year, he makes a difference in the lives of disabled children by attending summer camp as a counselor and friend. He partners with different community organizations to be involved in teaching fire and life safety to students from at-risk neighborhoods. Bako volunteers his time and finances during the holidays to distribute good cheer and gifts as well.
