The City of North Las Vegas received a $1,000 prize through the Reader's Digest "We Hear You America" campaign and tour, and could have a shot at a $40,000 prize as well.

The prize money will be used to offer a free day at a community pool for children.

The campaign is intended to bring money and attention to towns across America that have been most affected by the economic downturn. By the tour's end, the campaign will have hit 100 American cities.

Reader's Digest tour representatives presented the check to North Las Vegas Mayor Shari L. Buck Wednesday morning.

"I'm really pleased we were selected," Buck said. "We are a great town, but because of these tough economic times, we've had to close some community pools. We are so grateful to Reader's Digest for selecting our city."

Reader's Digest selected North Las Vegas because it won one of the top 10 spots in the campaign's first round of "cheering" at the start of the tour. It also recognized the city’s community pride and support at an event in March 2003 that brought together community partners and Clark County to officially dedicate the 50,000-square-foot warehouse for the Community Food Bank of Clark County in North Las Vegas.

Reader's Digest has re-opened the voting through May 16, giving North Las Vegas residents another opportunity to cheer the loudest at www.RD.com and compete to win the grand prize of $40,000.
