A program aimed at helping African-American boys graduate from high school and continue their education celebrated its first success stories Monday.

Clark County School District officials recognized more than 30 students at Mojave High School to complete a pilot program aimed at improving proficiency and graduation rates for African-American male students. The students joined AAMI (African American Male Initiative) during their freshman year. Along with their regular studies, they completed AAMI-related coursework and activities, such as visiting colleges, submitting admission forms and pursuing financial assistance.

Six schools in the U.S. participated in the initial AAMI study. Donations from Citibank supported the program at Mojave, and the $25,000 check presented Monday allows other students to get assistance with college prep next year.
