Lincoln Elementary 23rd School Adopted by Children's Literacy Program

Students at Lincoln Edison Elementary School in North Las Vegas were surprised by two assemblies on February 25th, where they learned their school had been adopted by Spread the Word Nevada. Spread the Word Nevada is a non-profit organization that focuses on promoting children's literacy, and this idea was met with great enthusiasm by the students at Lincoln!

The assemblies introduced the students to the Kids to Kids program, which encourages reading and book ownership, and explained about all the joys of reading. The assembly concluded with each student receiving a reading bag and five books. Through the program, 685 Lincoln students will receive monthly book distributions and access to family literacy services.

Jump Rope for Heart at Manch Elementary School

Students at Jacob E. Manch Elementary School literally jumped their way to better health.  With help from their PE teacher, Lara Heifner and Principal Diane Lewis, the students decided to take part in the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart campaign. It required them to learn about the importance of heart health, to take part in regular exercise, and learn ways to increase their heart rate and why it's important for them to do that. These lessons were spread throughout the month.

The campaign culminated with a big event on the school's blacktop play area on Thursday, February 24th, 2011.  Hundreds of kids took part in a massive jump-a-thon. To help support this positive campaign, The Cannery Casino & Hotel, which frequently assists the school with activities, decided to give the kids something to be proud of.  The Cannery donated $1,000.00 to the American Heart Association on behalf of all the kids.  That money will help the Heart Association spread this positive health message to even more schools next year.
