12th Annual Raul Elizondo Day at Elizondo Elementary School March 9th

This Wednesday, March 9th, is the 12th Annual Raul Elizondo Day at Elizondo Elementary School. Elizondo Elementary School was named after fallen officer Raul Elizondo, who was killed in the line of duty on January 30th, 1995. On Wednesday, the North Las Vegas Police Department will be joined by police officers from all over Southern Nevada for Raul Elizondo Day, which will involve classroom activities, police demonstrations, a parade of emergency response and public safety vehicles, and a ceremony honoring Raul Elizondo.

Events begin at 8:15. Elizondo Elementary School located at 4865 Goldfield Street in North Las Vegas.

Springs Preserve hosts Spring Plant Sale, Saturday, March 26

Unusual, desert adapted plants including a large selection of agaves and cacti will be among those offered for sale as the Springs Preserve hosts its annual Spring Plant Sale Saturday, March 26, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The sale will feature limited quantities of about 5,000 native and drought-tolerant plant species, including seasonal perennials. Plants will be sold in container sizes ranging from 2 inches up to 5 gallons. Springs Preserve garden staff experts will be on hand to answer customers’ questions about how to care for their new plants.

New at this year’s event will be a silent auction to bid for cactus and succulent container gardens, and “table top” garden displays also will be offered for sale.

Springs Preserve members will have exclusive access to the sale from 7-8 a.m. The sale will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Girl Scout Summer Camp Registration is Now Open!

The Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada are now accepting summer camp registrations for the 2011 summer sessions, which begin as early as from June 19 to August 14th. Programs include activities such as hiking, biking, rock climbing, adventure courses, campfires, and more!

“Summer camp has been a tradition in the U.S. for more than 150 years. Girls spending time at Camp Foxtail this summer will find themselves on an adventure with fresh new challenges and pushing themselves to achieve them,” said Kelle Boteilho, Chief Operating Officer. “Girls will walk away with new friends and memories to last a lifetime.”

Johnson Middle Schools Learns About the Dangers of Kitchen Fires

This Monday, the students of Carroll M. Johnson Middle School learned about the dangers of cooking fires with a live demonstration by the North Las Vegas Fire Department. Using a specially designed prop, the firefighters started a small stove top grease fire. The firefighters then demonstrated how to safely extinguish the fire. Thanks for showing the teens of North Las Vegas how to handle themselves in this type of common kitchen emergency!

CCSD Seeks Imput on Budget from North Las Vegas Residents at Town Hall Meeting

Clark County is facing some tough decisions when it comes to the new round of budget cuts facing the school district. In order to make the best informed decisions about how to proceed, CCSD is hosting a Town Hall meeting to get feedback directly from the residents of Clark County. The thoughts and feedback you put forth at the meeting will in turn be used to help the district develop budgets for 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 based on projected shortfalls and the governor’s proposed budget.

For the Sake of Peace Festival begins March 5th at CSN

The For The Sake of Peace Festival, a youth-hosted festival that focuses on the prevention of violence, begins this weekend with a Youth Nonviolence Forum at CSN's Charleston Campus. The 5th also sees the opening of two related art exhibits, the “Victory Over Violence” , which will be on the CSN Charleston and Cheyenne campuses, and the exhibit  “Transforming the Human Spirit: From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace”, which will be at the Cheyenne campus.
