Man Dead in Officer-Involved Shooting | News
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev.-- The corner of Martin Luther King and Cheyenne Boulevards became the scene of a violent end to a police pursuit resulting in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon.
North Las Vegas Police spokeswoman Chrissie Coon said her department is investigating the shooting death of a suspect. She said the shooting involved a multi-jurisdictional fugitive task force.
"Typically in a situation like this where there is an active pursuit, a lot of times the suspect will dictate the actions of the officer, and investigators have to piece together exactly what led up to this shooting," Coon said. "There were several witnesses in the area at the time that this shooting occurred. This is a very busy street. There was a lot of traffic out here, so detectives have to try and talk to each witness that may have seen what happened."
The task force, used to capture people considered dangerous and who are wanted on serious outstanding warrants, includes officers from the U.S. Marshal's Office, Homeland Security and Metro Police. Police would not reveal what the man was wanted for.
Authorities say the pursuit started at a different location when agents with the task force tracked a 27-year-old man out of Arizona. A white car driven by a woman crashed into another car and led officers on a pursuit to the intersection of Martin Luther King and Cheyenne. That's where police say the suspect got out and ran.
A witness reported seeing five unmarked police cars following another car. When the car stopped near the intersection, the man jumped out of the car and started running.
The man reached for or made a motion to reach for something. That's when a single gun shot was heard, the witness said.
"The cop had him with a gun," said witness Alberto Quinones. "He looked like he wanted to do something. I don't know if he was running or what it was that he had in his hand, and that's when the guy shot him right then and there."
Police say they have arrested two women in connection with the pursuit - the female driver and another woman inside the car. Police are not releasing details about possible connections the male suspect may have had to Nevada.
The coroner's office will release the name of the suspect.
