Steven Brooks

LAS VEGAS -- Assemblyman Steven J. Brooks attempted to punch a Metro Police officer and wrestled with the officer on the ground before being arrested Sunday, according to the arrest report.

Metro officers responded to the 6000 block of Turtle River Avenue in northeast Las Vegas to investigate reports of domestic battery. Brooks' wife, Ada, ran to a neighbor's home to call police.

Arriving officers encountered Brooks, 40, in the driveway of the residence. According to Metro, Brooks did not follow commands to keep his hands out of his pockets and when an officer attempted pat him down, Brooks tried to punch the officer. The report details how Brooks and the officer ended up wrestling on the ground, and Brooks yelled, "I've got your gun." Another officer stepped in to help make the arrest.

Officers said Brooks yelled and swore at them, asking if they knew who he was.

Ada Brooks told police Steven Brooks pulled her by the hair and put her face against the kitchen counter. Police said she suffered a cut to her bottom lip.

A woman who identified herself as Ada Brooks called 8 News Now Monday night and said the charges she filed against her husband were not true.

"He's a loving and compassionate person that has had a mental breakdown and needs help," she said. "I called the police because I reacted on impulse. At the time, what I saw in his eyes was not my husband.

"I panicked as this has never happened before. My husband and I have raised four kids that aren't his biological children and has been a wonderful father and husband.

"As his wife, I would never diminish the character or destroy the genuine person he is."

This is the second time in a month Brooks has been arrested. He was arrested in January for threatening to harm Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick.

Brooks is free from jail on a $4,000 bail. Brooks told the Associated Press he thinks police were trying to kill him.
