Driver Dies After Crashing Into Traffic Light Control Box

LAS VEGAS -- A person is dead after crashing their car into a traffic light control box Monday morning near Lake Mead and Tonopah.

The accident occurred at 9:40 a.m. Metro Police received a call about a reckless driver in the area. The car was traveling eastbound on Lake Mead before the accident. Police believe speed was a factor in the crash.

The passenger in the car was transported to University Medical Center and their condition is unknown at this time.

The Lake Mead and Tonopah intersection currently is shut down for investigation.

Officers from Shooting Identified

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. - North Las Vegas Police have identified the two officers who were shot during a domestic call March 26. Officers Dwight Kuykendall and Loran McAlister sustained gunshot wounds at a home on Silver Edge Street.

Officer McAlister's injuries were minor. Officer Kuykendall was taken to University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. He was released from the hospital Wednesday night. 

Both officers remain on paid administrative leave.

Officer in Stable Condition After Being Shot Monday Night

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. - A North Las Vegas Police Officer, who was shot near Centennial Parkway and Clayton Street, remains hospitalized in stable condition following an officer involved shooting Monday night.

According to police, officers were responding to reports of a domestic violence situation at a home in the 6300 block of Silver Edge Street at 10 p.m. When officers arrived, family members where waiting outside. They say a man armed with a shotgun remained inside.

Four officers were attempting to enter the home when the suspect opened fire on them. One of the officers was struck and suffered a serious gunshot wound. That officer, and another officer, returned fire while the officer who was shot was pulled out of the house. He was then transported to University Medical Center in serious condition.

North Las Vegas Police Hand Out Dozens of Citations

North Las Vegas Traffic officers targeted crosswalks around the city early this month. The project was called “Pedestrians Can Walk Safely.”

Officers were looking for drivers who failed to yield to people crossing the street and for pedestrians not using crosswalks. In all, North Las Vegas officers issued 177 citations and gave out 10 verbal warnings during the event on March 5. The largest number of citations, 83 in all, went to drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians. The second largest number of citations went to people with driver’s license violations. 

The effort came on the heels of several deadly accidents in North Las Vegas in recent months. In one accident, a 6-year-old girl was killed when she was hit by a car while she was trying to cross the street with some friends.

SUV Strikes Pedestrian in North Las Vegas

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. - North Las Vegas Police are investigating an auto-pedestrian accident near Cheyenne Avenue and Pecos Road. Police say an SUV struck a teen boy.

The accident happened Monday shortly after 8:30 p.m. The boy was transported to University Medical Center. Police say it does not appear his injuries are life threatening.

The SUV initially fled the scene, but officers stopped the vehicle near Alexander Road and Pecos. The driver of the SUV was taken into custody.

Reid, Urban League Leaders Meet in Washington

Nevada Senator Harry Reid this week met with Las Vegas Urban League President and CEO Elsie Lewis and its board chair, Rev. D. Edward Chaney, to explore partnership opportunities with the Las Vegas and National Urban League.

Last October, Reid welcomed Reverend Chaney as he delivered the invocation before the Senate, as seen here.

Police Looking for Suspect in Swap Meet Shooting

NORTH LAS VEGAS -- North Las Vegas Police are looking for a suspect in connection with a shooting at a swap meet Saturday.

The shooting happened just before 4 p.m., at the Broadacres Swap Meet on Las Vegas Boulevard and Pecos Road. The victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

There is no description of the suspect. Police have not said the motive of the shooting.
