Two Las Vegas elementary school students scored a cash prize in a statewide contest.

Shayla Embriz, a fourth-grader at Elizondo Elementary, and Angel Gonzales, a fifth-grader at Ullom Elementary, both won $529 in the Third Annual Nevada $529 College Savings Day Contest.

Co-sponsored by the State Treasurer’s Office and the Nevada Bankers Association, the contest was open to all Nevada Kindergarten through fifth-grade students, with the prize being a $529 gift to be used to open a college savings plan account or to enhance an existing account through Upromise, Nevada’s College Savings Plans program administrator.

The Nevada Bankers Association once again donated the $529 prizes. The five winners were selected via random drawing: two from Clark County, one from Washoe County, and one each from a northern and southern Nevada rural community.

“We congratulate these students and most certainly appreciate the more than 1,000 entries that were received from across the state,” State Treasurer Kate Marshall said. “As the administrator of Nevada College Savings Plans program, I would like to encourage all those who participated in the contest to visit the website of the ‘Walk Into My Future’ program, a do-it-yourself program that helps students of all ages save money for higher education by directing pledges to participants’ UCF 529 Plan accounts.”
