Las Vegas Students Take on Rebel Reading Challenge

The UNLV Rebels partnered with SuperPawn and Spread the Word Nevada, a local nonprofit, children's literacy program, for the Rebel Reading Challenge. Eight schools adopted by Spread the Word Nevada for literacy services participated in the challenge.

More than 573,600 pages were read by participating elementary schools in the Las Vegas Valley. Winning classes from Wynn and C.P. Squires Elementary attended the last Rebel Basketball game. For many of these students, this was their first basketball game. “This was the best thing I’ve ever done,” reported a student from C.P. Squires Elementary School. Schools adopted by Spread the Word Nevada consist of students with economic barriers.

"Literacy is one of the most important pathways to a child's future success,” said Caroline Ciocca, Director of Community Relations for SuperPawn.  "We are proud to partner with UNLV in supporting this program, which provides fun and meaningful incentives for students to embrace books and discover the joy and opportunities they bring.” SuperPawn has been a long time children’s literacy advocate and a Spread the Word Nevada supporter since 2008.
