Walk Safely Event Planned for Monday

North Las Vegas Police will be out Monday to enforce the rules of the road for pedestrians.

The Pedestrians Can Walk Safely event will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Officers will be targeting mid-block crosswalks on streets with a high volume of traffic. They will be looking for drivers who do not yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk and pedestrians who fail to use a crosswalk.

They will also be looking for cars that pass cars stopped for pedestrians. That is exactly what happened last year when a 6-year-old girl was killed. A group of girls were trying to cross a busy street in North Las Vegas. Several cars stopped but one car did not, hitting the girls. One girl was killed. Two others were seriously hurt.

The goal of Monday’s event is to educate drivers and pedestrians to be more aware of their surroundings. Funding for the targeted enforcement came from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.
