Part of Centennial Parkway Closed Next Week for Repairs

Public Works crews will close Centennial Parkway from Pecos Road to Walnut Street beginning Monday. Repairs will include grinding out worn sections of asphalt and installing new asphalt.

Detours will be set up around the work site, along Pecos Road south to Tropical Parkway, from Tropical Parkway east to Walnut Street and then north back up to Centennial.  Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.

The work is expected to be complete by Thursday. For more information, call Roadway Operations at 633-1267.

Viva Bike Vegas Registration Open

Cycling enthusiasts in Nevada and across the country are invited to join the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) for Viva Bike Vegas 2011 on Saturday, Oct. 15.

This year, all riders will have the unique opportunity to bike the bright lights of the world-famous Las Vegas Strip. The fourth annual cycling event will feature three spectacular routes for cyclists of all skill levels, including a 103-mile century ride, as well as 60-mile and 17-mile routes. Century riders will travel from the Las Vegas Strip to the vistas of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and the scenic trails near Lake Mead National Park.

Riders can register for any of the three routes for only $85 until May 14. Pricing increases thereafter. Online registration is open at www.vivabikevegas.com.

Major Detour on 215 at North 5th Street

A major detour of the I-215 beltway in the northern part of the valley will divert traffic for up to six months.

Starting at 9 p.m. Thursday, Clark County Public Works will divert all westbound traffic for six months along the 215 at North 5th Street between Losee Road and Aliante Parkway.

Both westbound travel lanes will be redirected onto the new North 5th Street ramps to get traffic off and on the main-line beltway. No westbound access will be provided to North 5th Street to the south, to and from the beltway.

The portion of westbound and eastbound mainline beltway between the North 5th Street exit, and North 5th Street on ramps will be closed to vehicular traffic in order to construct the North 5th Street Bridge.

Eastbound traffic will remain diverted to the North 5th Street ramps.

North Las Vegas traffic officers conducted a "Pedestrians Matter" safety event March 18 targeting drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk and pedestrians who failed to utilize marked crosswalks.   

Officers issued the following citations:

104 - failure to yield to pedestrian violations 

4     - seat belt/child restraint violations 

11   - driver's license violations 

6     - registration violations

2     - equipment violations

18   - insurance violations 

1     - failure to yield violation 

12   - miscellaneous violations

49   - verbal warnings

Lake Mead, Lake Mohave Offer Free Memorial Day Entry for Safe Boaters

The National Park Service is waiving lake use fees Saturday, May 28 through Monday, May 30 on Lake Mead and Lake Mohave – a savings of $16 per vessel – for boaters who show proof of completing an approved boating course.

"Statistics show that the majority of boaters who are involved in accidents report that they haven't completed a formal boating education course," Superintendent Bill Dickinson said.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics showed that in 2009, 78 percent of boating accidents and 86 percent of boat fatalities involved operators with no formal boating education.

"We're announcing this early so boaters who haven't taken a course will have a chance to do so before the holiday weekend," Dickinson said.
