Hundreds of students from six elementary schools in the Clark County School District got a chance to take to the stage of the Smith Center for the Performing Arts Tuesday and perform part of a play they have been working on for months.
The students were part of the Disney Musicals in Schools program. Under the program, Disney gave the Smith Center money to set up theater programs at Wynn, Beckley, Squires, Cox, Bracken and Paradise elementary schools.
The performing arts center hired teaching artists to direct and produce a Disney musical at the schools. They were also given Disney licensing and show kits at no charge.
The teaching artists also worked with the faculty and staff of the schools to create an ongoing theatre program.
The partnership with the Smith Center is only the second in the company's history. Disney Theatrical Group decided to launch the Disney Musical in Schools project because it was concerned that kids in low-income, urban schools were not getting equal access to theatrical arts.
The students performed the entire full-length musical for their school and surrounding community.
