NLV man, woman face more charges in child death case

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The couple arrested in connection with the death of a 3-year-old North Las Vegas girl are now facing additional charges.

Jondrew Lachaux and Kellie Phillips appeared in North Las Vegas Justice Court Thursday morning and learned an amended complaint with additional charges has been filed against them. Both are being held on a $1 million bail.

Lachaux is now facing 20 counts, including 17 counts of child abuse or neglect, and one count each of  kidnapping, sexual assault and concealing evidence. Phillips is facing eight counts. Both of their cases have been merged together.

"If you look to the criminal complaint, there's different ways that we accuse both of these defendants of abusing and neglecting these three individual children and that's why there are so many charges," said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson.

Police say Lachaux and Phillips left the 3-year-old for months in the care of Phillips' 17-year-old daughter, who police say also gave birth to Lachaux's child during his and Phillips' absence. Some of the new charges against Lachaux are in relation to the alleged sexual assault of the teen.

Police discovered the body of the 3-year-old while investigating an incident involving the teen's 4-month-old child. The baby, who was suffering from undernourishment, was taken to Sunrise Hospital, but has since been released.

The 3-year-old died while in the care of the teen. Her cause of death has yet to be determined.

The Clark County District Attorney's Office announced it will not charge the teen in connection with the case, but there could be more charges filed against the parents.

A preliminary hearing for Lachaux and Phillips has been set for May 21 at 9 a.m.
